The American Bulldog today When you refer to the breed today its missleading to sum it up with consistent common traits alone. It has some common features but overall the variations are great depending on typ, blood, breeding and the individual dog. To a start the differences occured since the breed was bred for a function rather then an appearance. Later on and closer to present time the differences turned even greater with the creation of the Johnson type, Bullys and the wast variation of breedings goals (and in some cases lack of them). This happend in the same period of time as the breed grow popular and some breeders responded to the market demand after more extreme looking dogs. So the gap grew where some continued to breed for functionality while others aimed for a more extreme expression. Even outside the the two main types (Johnson/Scott etc) so are the variations quite big. This is to our firm bealive due to the lack of common breeding goals and the constant outcrossing (which results into a lack of fixation of different traits). The situation is still very simular today which is why there are so much variations within the breed still (in terms of functionality, health, appereance etc) Thats why we choose to focus on our dogs here, rather then the breed overall or to copy paste a breed standard. Since our dogs will most likely differ from the next persons due to the way we are breeding, are selective and the blood we build our program on. Our view of the American Bulldog The dogs we found our program on has an actual tested present as hogdogs no more then 1 generation back at the most. Prey is and should be a natural part of their nature. The traits we are breeding into are such that allows you to work the dog in current fields (obedience, protection, tracking, muscle sports etc) while still carrying one of the things that makes the breed uniqe with them, as catchdogs. We value the history of the breed but even more so trys to adapt it to this century where dog aggression and other leftover traits has no purpose. The American Bulldog should still have heart, a will to work, be a great family member, has a well balanced degree of defense which shouldnt have to surface untill a real threat situation, be solid with sounds and enviroments, has balanced nerves and be able to learn. Another feature is that they shouldnt be reserved but should have the distinct and reputable "bulldog-social" trait. The American Bulldog should be confident without outgoing dog aggression, have a natural strength, tenacity when engaged into a task and high workethic. This is also the reason why we linebreed and a handfull of the traits that we do select our dogs by. To get what we see as a ideal American Bulldog. Not for everyone, but definitely for people whom values functionality.
